No last minute comeback for the Applet
April 8, 2008 – 4:04 pmI’ve been playing around with the Flex 3 builder lately and I’ve come to the sad conclusion that JSP’s future role in the java webapp will be severely limited and the venerable Java Applet is already a dead man walking. Flex has a interface that seems, so far, seems to be much easier to use than even the most modern Swing tools. It’s easier I think because there is only one GUI toolkit. No SWT vs Swing battles happening here. The Flex tool chain seems to have been made by a team made of both engineers and designers. A nice change of pace from what comes from Sun, IBM, Oracle and the rest of the Java sausage party.

Hi FunkyCodeMonkey, I couldn’t find any contact info to email you directly, so I’m leaving a comment to say that I thought your short posting here was thoughtful and provocative. Although I might wish things were different, your piece sums up what a lot of people seem to be thinking. I quoted you pretty flagrantly at Javalobby, but your original was so brief I couldn’t see how to be fair except to include it all. I hope that’s OK with you, and that you’ll join in the discussion.
Cheers,
Rick

Yeah, I’m not sure about that.
First, I agree that Java Applets are as good as dead. Realistically, they suck big time.
Flash was the Applets nemesis however - not Flex. Applets were got their death sentence long before Flex came along.
Also, I don’t see how JSP corroltates to Applets or Flex for that matter? It’s like saying “cars (JSP) will become extinct because the colour blue (Applets) is no longer available”.

I disagree. I think you are comparing apples with oranges. See: http://mdichi.wordpress.com/2008/04/09/where-are-the-java-applets/
