First, I agree that Java Applets are as good as dead. Realistically, they suck big time. Flash was the Applets nemesis however - not Flex. Applets were got their death sentence long before Flex came along. Also, I don't see how JSP corroltates to Applets or Flex for that matter? It's like saying "cars (JSP) will become extinct because the colour blue (Applets) is no longer available". Yeah, I’m not sure about that.
